As students get older, not only does dance get more challenging, but students also face other pressures at school, with friendships, etc. I am finding myself constantly reminding students to keep working hard and maintain a positive outlook in class, but sometimes a game can help make the attitude surrounding this lighter.
But shouldn't dancers just want to do this on principle? To be a better dancer?
In theory, yes.
But as an adult teacher, it is easy to forget what it was like as dancer in middle and high school. Sometimes, practice for practice's sake isn't enough motivation. Remember, you only learned this life lesson through age, time, and proof of practice.
So, I try to encourage these habits by sneaking them into a fun game. And maybe, just maybe, it's reinforcing these ideas subconsciously.
Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but you have to admit it's fun to play games on a slow day in class, right?
Here is the link to my customizable DANCE BINGO card, print it out and have students play for little prizes, stickers, or even just bragging rights!
Extra Tip: Have students play against themselves and not the other students if competition is a source of tension in your dance classroom.
