3 Best Preschool Dance Themes

We all know children love a good, immersive theme (and so do we!). Here are 3 themes you can try out that break the mold of princesses and fairy tales!

1. Things that Go

Trains, planes, and automobiles...and helicopters, rockets, bikes, and more! The possibilities are endless, plus the whole theme centers around movement! Introduce stopping and going with Red Light, Green Light. Play around with speed (run fast like a rocket!)

Best of all, lots of ballet steps lend themselves nicely here -- pirouettes and helicopters, passés and pedaling, chassés and trains)

Try out this song in class, and add the movements!

The Dancers on the Bus

The dancers on the bus go up and down, up and down, up and down

The dancers on the bus go up and down, on the way to class!

The dancers on the rocket zoom up up up! Up up up! Up up up!

The dancers on the rocket zoom up up up! On the way to class!

The dancers on the bike rock back and forth, back and forth, back and forth

The dancers on the bike rock back and forth, on the way to class!

The dancers in the helicopter twirl around........

The dancers in the train go chug chug chug....

The dancers on the plane glide to and fro....

etc!

2. Weather

This theme is no stranger to those in the creative movement world! From choreographing cute dances to Mr. Sun to pretending to jump in puddles, this theme is a winner!

Try having your students blow in the wind, fall like raindrops, dance like snowflakes, and bask in the sunshine. You can also change the weather mid-song and have your students perform differently!

You can follow my changed lyrics from We're Going on a Bear Hunt to "We're Walking Through the Weather":

We're Walking Through the Weather

Chorus:

We're walking through the weather (We're walking through the weather)  I think it's going to change (I think it's going to change,)

I'm not scared (I'm not scared) What a beautiful day! (What a beautiful day!) Uh-oh!  Wind!  Blustery, gusty wind! We can't go over it.  We can't go under it.  We've got to go through it!  (blowing around: Woosh, woosh woosh...)

Chorus: We're walking through the weather...

Uh-oh!

Rain!  Heavy, steady rain! We can't go over it.  We can't go under it.  We've got to go through it!  (Splish splash.....)

(repeat for snow, hot sun, hail, sleet, ice, and more!)

3. On the Farm

Combine dance with something kids already know and love: Old MacDonald's Farm! Use alliteration to help ballet concepts stick. Make pigs plié, chickens chassé, Cows cambré, Bunnies bounce, Dogs dégagé, and so much more!

You can also have kids associate sounds with steps, for example: "When I call out MOO, do a leap! When I say CLUCK CLUCK , do a spin!"

And if all else fails, do this:

Old MacDonald Had a Ballet Class

Old MacDonald had a ballet class, ee ii ee ii oo.

And in that ballet class he had a plié, ee ii ee ii oo.

With a bend bend here and a bend bend there,

Here a bend, there a bend, everywhere a bend bend.

Old MacDonald had a ballet class, ee ii ee ii oo.

Had a....

Bourée (tip toe here...)

Sauté (jump jump here...)

Tendu (point point here...)

Chassé (chase chase here...)

Passé (lift lift here...)
